The Atmosphere
Here’s a fun fact to open with: the air you’re breathing right now is only a tiny sliver of the whole atmosphere, and it’s stacked in layers like a cake nobody asked for (but everybody needs). The layer we live in and where basically all of our weather happens is called the troposphere. It only goes up about 7 to 12 miles before it hands things off to the next layer, and here’s the counterintuitive part: it gets colder the higher you climb. Stand at the base of a thunderstorm and the top of that same storm could be sitting in air well over 100 degrees colder than what you’re feeling on the ground!
Above the troposphere is the stratosphere, home of the ozone layer, and this one flips the script — it actually warms back up as you go higher, thanks to all that ozone soaking up the sun’s UV rays. Keep going and you hit the mesosphere (the coldest layer of them all, and where most meteors burn up before they ever reach us — so next time you see a shooting star, tip your cap to the mesosphere). After that comes the thermosphere, blisteringly hot and home to the auroras and the International Space Station, and finally the exosphere, which just kind of… fades into space. No hard finish line, it just thins out until there’s nothing left to call atmosphere anymore.
Fun trivia nugget: the word “meteorology” itself goes all the way back to Aristotle, who wrote a book called Meteorologica around 340 BC. It comes from the Greek word meteoros, meaning “high in the air” — which is honestly a pretty perfect name for the study of everything happening above our heads.
Atmospheric Pressure
You can’t see air, but don’t let that fool you — it has weight, and it’s pushing down on you right now. That push is air pressure, and at sea level, there’s a whole lot of atmosphere stacked above you doing the pushing. In fact, it's about 14 pounds per square inch and it's pushing on you - right now! Climb a mountain and you’ve got less air overhead, so the pressure drops — that’s a big part of why it’s tougher to catch your breath at altitude.
Here’s the part that matters for your daily forecast: air pressure is basically the engine behind the weather map. Falling pressure is usually your first tip-off that questionable weather is approaching, like rain, storms or snow. Rising pressure? That’s often your ticket to clearer skies and nice days outside. Pressure differences are exactly what create wind in the first place and can cause body and headaches, too!
Air rushes from high pressure to low pressure, kind of like air escaping a balloon, except on a scale that spans entire states. A great way to remember it is that air flows from the mountain of the high to the valley of the low!
